Mastering Behavioural Interview Questions: STAR Method Guide
Interview & Skills Coach - Corporate trainer and interview coach with clients at PwC, MTN, and Safaricom.
Behavioural interview questions are the most common type of question asked by employers globally, and African companies are no exception. Questions like "Tell me about a time when you dealt with a difficult colleague" or "Describe a situation where you had to meet a tight deadline" can feel overwhelming without preparation.
The STAR method provides a structured framework for answering these questions confidently and convincingly.
What Is the STAR Method?
STAR stands for: - Situation - Set the scene and context - Task - Describe your specific responsibility - Action - Explain what you did (this should be the longest part) - Result - Share the outcome, ideally quantified
Why STAR Works
Recruiters use behavioural questions because past behaviour is the best predictor of future performance. The STAR method ensures you give specific, evidence-based answers rather than vague generalisations.
Without STAR: "I'm good at handling pressure." With STAR: "At GTBank (Situation), I was tasked with processing end-of-quarter reports for 200 accounts with a 48-hour deadline (Task). I created a priority system, delegated verification to two colleagues, and worked extended hours (Action). We completed all reports 6 hours ahead of deadline with zero errors, and my manager nominated me for the quarterly excellence award (Result)."
The 10 Most Common Behavioural Questions
1. Tell me about a time you faced a challenge at work Focus on a genuine challenge, not a trivial one. Show problem-solving and resilience.
2. Describe a situation where you worked in a team Highlight collaboration, your specific contribution, and the team outcome.
3. Give an example of when you showed leadership Leadership is not just about managing people. It can be taking initiative, mentoring others, or driving a project forward.
4. Tell me about a time you made a mistake Show self-awareness, accountability, and what you learned. Never say "I can't think of one."
5. Describe a time you dealt with a difficult person Focus on professionalism, empathy, and resolution. Never badmouth anyone.
6. How have you handled a tight deadline? Show time management, prioritisation, and the ability to deliver under pressure.
7. Tell me about a time you went above and beyond Show initiative and dedication without making it sound like you have no boundaries.
8. Describe a situation where you had to learn something quickly Show adaptability and learning agility - highly valued in today's fast-changing job market.
9. Give an example of when you resolved a conflict Show mediation skills, emotional intelligence, and professional resolution.
10. Tell me about your biggest professional achievement Choose something relevant to the role you are interviewing for. Quantify the impact.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- •Being too vague - "I'm generally good at teamwork" is not a STAR answer
- •Talking too long - Keep answers to 2-3 minutes maximum
- •Focusing on "we" instead of "I" - The interviewer wants to know YOUR contribution
- •Not having enough examples - Prepare 8-10 STAR stories that can be adapted to different questions
- •Skipping the Result - Always end with a quantified outcome
How to Prepare
- Review the job description and identify the top 5 competencies they are looking for
- Prepare 2 STAR stories for each competency
- Practice aloud (not just in your head)
- Time yourself - each answer should be 90-180 seconds
- Get feedback from a friend or career coach
