"The Youth, Jobs and Skills Marker System is about ensuring Africa's young people have a real say and active role in building sustainable economies - not as passive recipients of youth programs.", Dr. Beth Dunford, VP Agriculture, Human & Social Development, African Development Bank

The Future of Work in Africa

    Key Trends

    • 01. Africa has the youngest population globally, with 60% under 25. By 2035, it will have the largest working-age population in the world.
    • 02. The digital economy is creating new job categories faster than traditional sectors. Tech hubs in Lagos, Nairobi, Cape Town, and Accra are driving innovation.
    • 03. Remote work adoption accelerated post-COVID, with African tech talent increasingly serving global clients via platforms like Andela and Turing.
    • 04. AI and automation will transform jobs across all sectors. Workers with digital skills and adaptability will have the strongest employment prospects.

    Challenges

    • 01. Skills mismatch: university curricula often lag behind industry needs, leaving graduates underprepared for available roles.
    • 02. Informal employment dominates: in many African countries, 80–90% of workers are in the informal sector with no contracts or social protection.
    • 03. Gender gaps persist: women face higher unemployment rates and lower wages across most African economies.
    • 04. Infrastructure gaps: unreliable internet and electricity limit remote work opportunities in rural areas.

    Data Sources & Methodology

Unemployment data: ILO Modelled Estimates as published by the World Bank (indicator SL.UEM.TOTL.ZS). These estimates use country-level data from labour force surveys, censuses, and administrative records.

Employment data: Statista / ILO modelled estimates for total employment in Africa (2014–2024), ages 15 and older. Published January 2026.

Youth unemployment: ILO Global Employment Trends for Youth 2024 - Sub-Saharan Africa Brief (August 2024).

Salary data: Compiled from national statistics bureaus, Xceed365 HR Pulse Survey (April 2025), and GlobalPayroll Alliance Africa Report (2024). Figures represent formal sector averages.

AfDB initiative: ILO/AfDB joint press release, 15 July 2025. Youth, Jobs and Skills Marker System announcement.

Important note: ILO modelled estimates may differ from national survey figures. For example, Nigeria's NBS reported 33.3% unemployment in Q4 2020 using a broader definition, while the ILO estimate was 9.7% using strict international criteria.
